Medical Weight Loss Program
Our program is an individually tailored program that addresses the causes of weight gain in each individual. Each individual is evaluated based on specific factors contributing to his/her weight gain. Therapy is directed towards the specific problems facing each person.
Components of the program include:
1. Behavioral therapy and lifestyle modification as maybe required for those with sugar addiction, obsessive eating problems, depression, post-traumatic stress disorder. 2. Supplements for almost all participants to optimize fat burning, reduce insulin levels, improve blood flow and provide basic nutrients for efficient cellular function. 3. Digestive Support: Improving intestinal bacteria and providing digestive aides to reduce fat and cholesterol absorption and reduce pancreatic stress 4. Fat Burning: Infrared sauna therapies followed by dermal infusions and massage to burn calories and stimulate metabolism 5. Hormonal Therapies: These are aimed towards correcting hormonal abnormalities that contribute to obesity. These may include replacement of thyroid or sex hormones as well as restoration of normal levels of insulin, Leptin and Amylin.
Behavioral Modification Therapies
Need for behavioral therapy is almost universal amongst those with weight issues. A screening questionnaire helps your physician make appropriate recommendations regarding a potential need for concomitant psychotherapy, hypnotherapy or medications for combating such problems. Examples of behavioral and psychiatric problems that require further treatment include: sugar addiction, binge eating behavior, attention deficit disorder, post- traumatic stress disorder and depression.
Whether a patient falls in one of these categories or not we request that all participants make gradual and lifelong commitments to simple changes in diet and activity levels. These are provided in weekly suggestions that accompany each pill box of vitamins and supplements. These are not difficult recommendations to follow up with. There are no extreme diets or exercise programs.
Supplements
Supplements are meant to replenish nutrients essential for appropriate metabolism, detoxification and excretion of toxins along with fat. These supplements restore essential nutrients for optimizing thyroid function, reversing adrenal fatigue, lowering insulin, Leptin and Amylin levels. Restoring melatonin levels is also addressed in those with chronic insomnia and in order to restore normal sleep patterns.
Digestive Support
Obese individuals have significant digestive abnormalities. Regardless of diet the need for digestive juices and enzymes increase in proportion to the weight of an individual. Thus organs of digestion, the pancreas, liver and gallbladder work overtime to service a much larger body than they were originally meant. Sugar addiction, binge eating, rapid intestinal transit and abnormal bowel bacteria further compound digestive issues often encountered in overweight individuals.
Besides promoting a healthy diet we use specific methods to promote changes in bowel bacterial flora. This is accomplished by taking short courses of specific antibiotics aimed at reducing the population of offending organisms. This is then followed by intake of high quality, live probiotics and prebiotics. This cycle is then repeated based on individual need in order to gradually restore normal bowel flora and lead to long term weight loss and then maintenance.
Fat Burning Optimization & Mitochondrial Rejuvenation
Besides detoxification and nutrient replenishment we use supplements directed specifically towards restoring mitochondrial function. Mitochondria are the energy producing, fat burning organelles present in almost all cells in the body. High quality supplements and anti- oxidants are used to restore mitochondrial efficiency enabling the body to reduce its fat burden. Mitochondrial damage is responsible for a great variety of illnesses complicating obesity such as cardiac disease. The main symptom of mitochondrial damage is fatigue. Other interventions used in our program including far infrared therapy also help to optimize mitochondrial function.
Far Infrared Sauna therapy
Far infrared (FIR) light is a safe and effective method for generating heat and vibration in the human body. FIR therapy can heat tissue evenly to a depth of 2-3 inches depending on individual body makeup. Unlike traditional saunas, FIR achieves the same heat on the surface as it does 2-3 deep in the body. Furthermore, although the body is heated the air in the sauna is significantly cooler than traditional saunas thus making the sauna much easier and safer while achieving dramatically better results. Sweats produced in FIR sauna is only 85% water whereas normal sweat or that generated in a traditional sauna is 97% water. Thus FIR removes some electrolytes as well as other substances deposited in tissue. Furthermore, by heating deep tissues and stimulating metabolism a 1/2 hour sauna session leads to urning 500-600 calories equivalent to the number of calories lost if one jogs at a rapid pace for the same amount of time.
Far infrared light therapy is widely recognized as an effective treatment for some medical conditions. In fact, it is so mainstream that it is covered by insurances including Medicare for the treatment of some medical problems that include neuropathy and non-healing wounds. However, not all far infrared saunas are the same and undirected use of these medical devices can be detrimental to one’s health. More details on FIR on page 5.
Dermal Infusions
Dermal infusion refers to the use of skin as a vehicle for the delivery of specific substances. This is an age old tradition that has been used for detoxification and rejuvenation of skin amongst other indications. Its efficacy is dependent on various heating methods used prior to application of the the medicine to the body. FIR is superior to all other methods for the preparation of skin for absorption of such substances as it allows the penetration of the infusium deep into the body. We use oxygen saturated oils fortified with specific substances to help detoxify the body and replenish essential nutrients lost during sauna therapies. Infusions involve self administration of the oils on the body then sitting in a massage chair for 10-20 minutes. Action of the massage chair helps to induce further relaxation while the movement on the back helps the uptake of substances dissolved in the oils into the large muscles of the back. Dermal infusions are an essential component of detoxification and neuropathy treatments that were developed in conjunction with our obesity program.
Leptin/Amylin
Leptin and Amylin are two of the most important determinants of weight food consumption and processing in the body. Along with thyroid and Cortisol these hormones play important parts in the regulation of metabolism overall. Therapy to restore the balance of these hormones to normal levels can happen naturally through the use of interventions above. Depending on individual preference and or response to the previously described therapies hormonal therapies may be necessary to reverse the cycle of obesity and restore balance to these hormones.
Treatment with medications aimed at restoring balance to this system requires use of injectable analogues of Amylin. These medications are injected 1-3 times a day for a period of 3-6 months for most individuals with an initial goal of losing 10-20% body weight in 6 months. Once balance is restored and above goals have been accomplished patients wean off all therapies. Depending on initial weight this cycle will be repeated after periods of 1-2 months of going off therapy and weight maintenance.
