Simple mention of the word “detoxification” conjures up images in the minds of many people of unpleasant fasts, liquid diets, cathartic use to induce diarrhea, high colonic enemas and strict regimens of strict dietary restrictions. For some the mere mention of the word “toxin” and its removal from the body quickly raises the red flag of medical quackery. Yet in some intuitive manner we are all aware of the fact that day to day we are bombarded with pollutants. As time goes by we accumulate toxins to the point where sooner or later they begin to interfere with vital processes in our bodies. Since changes occur slowly we do not notice them. As toxins slowly find hiding places in our bodies they slowly chip away at the most vulnerable parts of our bodies. We accept as natural consequences of the lives we lead and the aging process some serious and epidemic health problems rampant in our society today. These include such common problems as insomnia, memory deficit, cognitive decline and gradual loss of certain abilities, aches and pains, failure of the special senses (taste, hearing, smell, touch), nerve disorders, depression, low thyroid, diabetes, heart disease, adrenal fatigue, anxiety to name a few. Is it possible that none of these are really expressions of natural processes but represent a disease caused by a special pollutant or toxin? The idea of toxins is neither medical quackery nor a concept originating or belonging to alternative medicine. Yet it is possible that commercial interests have subdued the enthusiasm of the medical establishment’s desire to identify and treat its consequences. Despite arguments on either side of the aisle, effects of pollutants and toxins is now widely recognized by all health establishments as a rampant problem in Western Society today. EPA (Environmental Protection Agency) recognizes the presence of dangerous levels of at least 30 toxins in the body of the average American today. Even substances such as PCB’s (polychlorinated Biphenyls) that have been banned for over 20 years continue to show up in the environment as there are no natural processes for ridding the body or the environment of these substances. Nature simply did not prepare for or did not have time to develop a process for metabolizing these man-made substances. As the species sitting on top of the food chain we consume an exaggerated amount of these substances because of our own effects on the environment and because we eat animals that themselves concentrate such toxins: fish, chicken, pork and beef. But the story does not end there. These animals we eat are really not animals as we know them. Agricultural business giants have turned all these animals into carnivores. Not just any carnivores, however. Cows are not stalking, attacking and eating one another. What happens in all commercial food production farms is that only about 60-70% of the flesh of any given animal is fit for human consumption. Parts of the animals, including fish, that is not fit for human use is ground up and re-fed to the animals of the next generation on that farm. Hence, the pollutants pass on from one generation to another and by default become more and more concentrated the longer a farm is in operation.
Is more and more concentration of these toxins along with metabolic byproducts of hormone and antibiotics used in commercial farms contributing to the obesity epidemic? Who knows for sure the effects of these substances? Would cancer causing viruses exert their life threatening effects if it is not for mercury rendering the white blood cells ineffective in fighting them? Would a person develop Parkinson’s or Alzheimer’s if it wasn’t for the presence of toxic levels of copper or Aluminum in brain cells? Would menopause be such a horrendous experience if nerve cells were not hyper-excitable and hormones were not blocked by Phthalate toxicity? No one really knows the answer to such questions. Yet some undeniable facts remain: Cancers are happening more and more in younger patients. Despite our more sophisticated approaches to cancer therapy why is the rate of death form such cancers in adolescents remaining the same as they were 25 years ago? Why is there an epidemic of obesity? Why does 10% of the non-diabetic and 20% of diabetic population suffer from neuropathy? We accumulate exposures over our lifetimes. We are exposed to a multitude of toxins through the air we breath, the food we eat and the radiation we are constantly exposed to as a simple function of living in the 21st century. The EPA recently released information on the top 0 environmental culprits with the highest chance of directly affecting the health of the US population and made unrealistic recommendations for avoiding them. These toxins include:
We feel strongly that no degree of paranoia and germaphobia can eliminate exposure to these toxins altogether. Of course, for most of us awareness of such problems did not occur until we already had a very large burden in our bodies. As such, we promote good lifestyle, food and hygiene choices. However, we do not feel that any level of good practice alone can overcome the damage that has already been done and to reverse processes that have already been set in motion. Hence, we promote the use of logical and appropriately monitored detoxification therapies we offer in our clinic to remove embedded toxins rather than recommending lifestyle changes that are neither practical nor sustainable long term. We highly recommend the use of a safe medical detoxification program such as ours to improve health and maintain health long term.
